Niccolò Biddau
Born in Italy (Turin), 1966
Freelance photographer since 1988
Niccolò Biddau started his activity as a freelance photographer in 1988 doing reportages in the Far East and Latin America. He subsequently focused on nude and fashion photography in Italy and abroad, and since 1998, has been specializing in black and white photography, with particular interest in the portrayal of urban landscapes, sculpture and interiors. The year 2002 marked a turning point in his pursuit, and the beginning of his investigation of the productive cycles of companies, placing the "aesthetics of the machinery" at the core of his interpretative language. From that moment on, every effort went into the development of this theme, with photographic campaigns on the excellence of the “Made in Italy” industry, subsequently published in monographs, displayed in exhibitions and reviewed by the most important Italian media. At the same time, he became involved in the photography of architectural and monumental complexes and their artistic components. Beginning in 2005, alongside his activity as a photographer, he began to work on behalf of major Italian institutions and companies as a curator of books and exhibitions centered around the theme of Italian industrial photography.
He collaborates with publishers, institutions and industries, by whom he is commissioned to carry out photographic campaigns. His works have been published in books, displayed at exhibitions and have won awards.
Because of his originality, artistic merits and style, the Black and White Spider Awards Jury - made up of thirty-nine of the most important decision-makers as concerns world photography - judged him to be one of the best international black and white photographers.
His photographs are distinguished by his skill at redesigning the borders of the reality of things, transferring therein all the subjective sensitivity that a vision is capable of suggesting to him. By using the language of black and white photography, he is drawn to working on full and void, exalting what is absolute about the material through the quietness that it holds within. His photography concentrates on the static nature of industrial objects, as well as sculptural and architectural forms, and this is communicated through the details, nearly always kept hidden, but which, once identified, flash forward in all their vitality.
